Glucose oxidase is used in the enzymatic determination of D-glucose in solution (1). Glucose oxidase oxidizes β-D-glucose to D-gluconolactate and hydrogen peroxide. Horseradish peroxidase is then used as the coupling enzyme for glucose determination. Although glucose oxidase is specific for β-D-glucose, solutions of D-glucose can be quantified as α-D-glucose will mutorotate to β-D-glucose as the β-D-glucose is consumed by the enzymatic reaction.
Ca. 300 U/mg protein.

Unit definition: 1 U catalyzes the oxidation of 1 µmole glucose to glucuronic acid per minute at 25 °C, pH 7 coupled with peroxidase and o-dianisidine (1).
Extraneous activities: Amylase, saccharase and maltase less than 0.05 %; GOD/catalase min. 2000.
