Beeswax

Beeswax

Beeswax is a natural wax secreted by honeybees (Apis mellifera) from abdominal wax glands. It is primarily used to construct honeycomb cells for brood rearing and food storage. As a simple lipid, beeswax exemplifies wax esters rather than glycerides, comprising a complex mixture that imparts plasticity, water resistance, and thermal stability.

Chemical Composition

Beeswax contains approximately 70–80% monoesters, including palmitate, palmitoleate, and oleate esters of long-chain alcohols (C30–C32) such as triacontanol. It also includes 12–18% hydrocarbons, mainly odd-numbered alkanes (C25–C31), with heptacosane (C27H56) as a predominant component. Free fatty acids represent 10–15%, primarily saturated C24–C32 species such as cerotic acid (C26:0). Minor constituents include diesters and triesters (8–14%), hydroxy esters (4–8%), and free alcohols (~1%). The approximate molecular representation C15H31COOC30H61 reflects the major component triacontyl palmitate.

Physical Properties

Beeswax is a yellow to golden solid at 20°C, with a melting range of 62–65°C and stable β-crystals persisting up to 71°C. It has a density of approximately 0.96 g/cm³ and a refractive index of 1.518. Insoluble in water, it dissolves readily in organic solvents such as chloroform and turpentine. Beeswax softens between 40–50°C, exhibiting notable plasticity attributed to molecular conformational flexibility. Its polymorphic transitions (α→β) and gelation behavior make it well-suited for diverse formulation applications.

Biosynthesis

Worker bees aged 12–18 days synthesize beeswax by converting dietary sugars and fats within specialized wax glands. Palmitate is produced via fatty acid synthase pathways, elongated to C24–C32 chains, reduced to corresponding alcohols, and esterified through acyltransferase activity. Wax is secreted as scales, which are then masticated and molded into honeycomb sheets. The final composition varies depending on bee strain, pollen sources, and environmental factors, with hydrocarbons ranging from 14.9–27.2% and C27 alkanes often dominating.
