Traditional preservation of live cells, tissues, and viruses relies almost exclusively on cryopreservation or continuous refrigerated cold-chain logistics. These methods are expensive, logistically complex, and introduce cellular stress through freeze-thaw cycles or prolonged hypothermic exposure in suboptimal media. Atelerix's patented plant-derived alginate hydrogel encapsulation platform overcomes these limitations by immobilising samples in a permeable 3D matrix that permits gas and nutrient exchange while dramatically reducing metabolism and mechanical stress. The result is robust preservation of viability, phenotype, functionality, and infectivity for days to weeks at 4–25 °C – transforming global sample transport, cell therapy supply chains, and research workflows.

The Core Technology: Permeable Alginate Hydrogel Encapsulation

 

Atelerix products are based on sterile, xeno-free alginate (plant-derived polysaccharide) that forms a thin, highly permeable hydrogels in seconds at room temperature. Cells, viruses, or tissues are gently mixed with the alginate solution and dispensed into vials, plates, or bags where rapid gelation occurs upon contact with calcium ions. The resulting matrix:
