Leptin is a peptide hormone that is produced by adipocytes and regulates appetite. Leptin binds to the leptin receptor, which is found in many tissues including the hypothalamus. The receptor activates an intracellular second messenger system that includes the protein kinase JAK2, leading to the activation of STAT3 transcription factor. Leptin has been shown to inhibit ion channels and activate or block receptors, depending on the type of cell it binds with.
