Cryogenic storage products are specialized laboratory consumables designed to preserve biological materials at ultra-low temperatures, typically at or below −130°C, where metabolic and biochemical processes are effectively arrested. They are foundational to biobanking, cell and gene therapy, vaccine research, and clinical diagnostics, and their performance depends on the coordinated design of vials, closures, racks, boxes, and identification systems.
Container Types and Formats
The primary container is the screw-cap cryovial, typically manufactured from polypropylene in volumes ranging from 0.5 mL to 5.0 mL. Vials are available with external or internal thread configurations; external-thread designs reduce the risk of contamination from handling, while internal-thread designs minimize liquid nitrogen ingress into the thread region. Cryogenic tubes may have conical or round bottoms, and self-standing formats are available for benchtop processing. Vials are organized in cryogenic freezer boxes, commonly configured to hold 25, 81, or 100 tubes, and in stackable racks with alphanumeric positions for efficient freezer-space utilization and rapid sample retrieval. Controlled-rate freezing containers and ice-free cooling products support the pre-storage cooling step, which is critical for preserving post-thaw viability of mammalian cells.
Applications and Considerations
Cryogenic storage products support the preservation of cell lines, serum, plasma, DNA, RNA, microbial stocks, proteins, tissue specimens, and clinical research samples for months to decades. In cell therapy manufacturing, cryovials are used for ultra-low-temperature storage of cell-based products, although standard vials represent an open step in the process that must be managed within closed-system workflows. Users should select vial volume, thread configuration, and rack format according to sample type and automation requirements, validate closure integrity for their specific storage phase, and avoid liquid-phase nitrogen storage unless the vial is explicitly rated for it.
