Human Cardiomyocytes

Human Cardiomyocytes are specialized contractile cells of the myocardium and major effectors of cardiac force generation and electrical excitation. Primary human cardiomyocytes isolated from fetal, neonatal, or adult heart tissue are used as in vitro models to study cardiac physiology, excitation–contraction coupling, calcium handling, sarcomere organization, electrophysiology, mitochondrial function, and mechanisms of cardiovascular disease. Adult human cardiomyocytes have limited proliferative capacity and can undergo structural and phenotypic changes during culture, making experimental conditions and culture duration important considerations. Nevertheless, freshly isolated primary cells can retain important structural, electrophysiological, metabolic, and pharmacological characteristics of the human myocardium and are therefore useful for translational cardiovascular research.
